Stagecraft

The Stagecraft Techonoloy class is a member of the Regional Occupational Program administered by the Ventua County Superintendent of Schools and taught by professionals who continue to work in the entertainment industry. Over the course of the school year students gain hands-on experience in all factets of backstage production. Each student is afforded a chance to focus in on his or her area of interest, with an eye toward evenntual placement in a professional internship and job.

Objective
By the end of this course students will be able to:
  1. Describe historical and developmental events significant to stagecraft.
  2. Participate in planning and implementing a production.
  3. Describe the responsibilities of personnel involving in a production.
  4. Develop a basic set storyboard for a production.
  5. Demonstrate the use of a basic sound system, including design and operation, in a performance.
  6. Demonstrate the use of a basic lighting system, including design and operation, in a performance.
  7. Design a set to meet production vision.
  8. Construct, set-up, use and strike a set in a production.
  9. Select, acquire or design costumes appropriate to the production.
  10. Design, select, apply make-up and strike a set in a production.
  11. Coordinate the staging of a live production.
  12. Demonstrate job search and retention skills.
Participation in stagecracft requires a strong commitment. Because this is an ROP class, professional standards are strictly enforced. Students are required to crew at least 2 shows/events per semester. All stagecraft students are given the oppertunity to be a designer, crew chief, or stagehand.
Stagecraft students serve in one of the following capacities per show: grip, light board operator, sound board operator, costumer, electrician, sound engineer, stage manager, technical director, stage carpenter.
